Mental Health and Well-Being:

Exercising and providing stimulating material for the mind and body can assist you in keeping motivated, positive and hopeful.

A 14 min office break yoga session, and guided meditation are two ways to maintain a balanced, healthy mind and body.

  • In this 15 minute boost session, learn three of Marian Power’s positive psychology practices to add to your well-being toolkit. Leave with practical daily habits that will help you to boost your self-kindness and cut through chaos with a sense of calm.
  • Head to Health launched by the Australian Federal Government, is a website which makes it easier for people to access free or low cost Australian digital mental health services.
  • Free online yoga classesto choose from with Humming Puppy
  • Black Dog free mental health webinars

Ikon made me feel really prepared for entering into the workforce due to their high emphasis on practice sessions between the students. Within the first few months, we were already practicing the skills as we learned them. This gave me the confidence to start working right away…

In the Know

The Enneagram by Shaun McMahon

The Enneagram is a map of personality that consists of 9 different archetypes. At its surface, it appears very much like other typing systems such as MBTI, yet the Enneagram has much more to offer as a means of better understanding yourself and others. For personal growth, it offers an opportunity to take a step back from the patterns we develop in early life, stopping cycles of reactivity in favor of engaging life in an intentional and meaningful manner. As a therapist, it’s an invaluable framework for case conceptualization and recognizing transference/countertransference. The Melbourne Enneagram Centre offers monthly in-person meetings in the CBD and fortnightly online meetings for those not based in Melbourne. These are run by Shaun, a third-year BIP student at IKON. Each meeting runs on a drop-in basis, focusing on a core component of the Enneagram, discussed both in partners and as a whole group. They’re a great way to learn about other types and see the world from a different perspective.

You can find out more information about our meetings at https://www.meetup.com/Melbourne-Enneagram

📰 The Transformation Journey

📖 Good Morning, I Love You
Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Practices to Rewire Your Brain for Calm, Clarity, and Joy

Revolutionary findings in neuroscience have demonstrated that we can change our happiness setpoint. But it’s not through changing our external world. It’s through changing our internal landscape,” writes Shauna Shapiro. In Good Morning, I Love You, Dr. Shapiro―one of the leading scientists studying the effects of mindfulness on well-being―shows us that acting with compassion toward ourselves is the key.

In short, lively chapters, Dr. Shapiro explains the basic brain science and offers numerous mindfulness and self-compassion practices. Stories from her life and research demonstrate how this powerhouse combination alleviates anxiety, boosts creative thinking, and enlarges our sense of belonging and purpose.

We can see it on brain scans. Negative and critical thoughts (and the vast majority of our thoughts are negative) cause the part of the brain responsible for learning to literally shut down. Kind and self-compassionate thoughts, by contrast, turn on the parts responsible for growth and change. With practice, we can literally rewire our brains for greater feelings of calm, joy, and possibility.

Try it and see . . . even if it makes you squirm. When you wake up tomorrow, take a deep breath, hand on heart, and say, “Good morning, I love you.” Then try it the next day. And the next. See what happens.
