The mental health statistics in Australia do not paint a pretty picture.
Every year, one in five Aussies experience some type of mental illness.
Mental illnesses are also the third leading cause of disability in Australia and about 4% of our population will have a major depressive episode each year.
Around 14% of Australians will also suffer from an anxiety disorder in the same time frame.
Teen suicide is a huge problem
The tragedy of young people taking their own lives is prevalent in Australia, and it is the leading cause of death for kids between the ages of five to 17.
Many of these children struggle to receive counselling, which is vital in helping them stay alive.
Australia needs more counsellors
Figures show there is currently only one psychologist for every 3,000 school students in Australia. This means many of our young people are not able to receive the mental health support they require to function at their best.
One of the best ways to reduce suicide in young people is to hire more counsellors and place them in schools throughout the country, although finding these counsellors isn’t always easy.
Problems young people face
For many students, eating problems, anxiety, depression and cyber bullying are harsh everyday realities. These problems can lead to self-harm and eventually suicide if they are not dealt with quickly and with the right support.
If students are able to receive youth counselling, this often leads to better performance in school and increased happiness.
It’s not just young people who need more counsellors
Unfortunately, data shows it isn’t just schools who need more counsellors – it is actually a countrywide problem.
Statistics from Job Outlook, show the employment level for counsellors has been growing consistently since 2010 and is a career that is going to continue to be in demand.
The sector needing counsellors the most is the Health Care and Social Assistance Industry, which has seen the fastest growth of all industries at a rate of more than 50% over the past decade.
